Tone Trainer

Pronunciation Practice

ฝึกวรรณยุกต์ fèuk wan-na-yúk

The Tone Trainer lets you practise your Thai tones. You speak a word into the microphone, and the app shows the shape of your pitch and tells you which of the five tones it heard — rising, falling, mid, high, or low.

Before you start, you’ll set up a quick voice profile (about half a minute). This is a one-time step that makes tone detection much more accurate for your voice.

A profile records your natural speaking pitch, so the app knows where your low, mid, and high sit. Here’s how:

  1. Make sure you’re in a quiet room.
  2. Tap “+ Add profile” below.
  3. Enter your name and tap Next.
  4. Tap Record (allow microphone access if asked), then read the sentence shown. Speak naturally. Tap Stop when you're done.
  5. Once your profile is saved, tap Start to begin practising.

💡 You can make a profile for each person who uses the app, and recalibrate any time from the trainer screen.

⚠️ Never use another person's tone profile. Each profile is calibrated to one person's voice. Using someone else's profile can lead to inaccurate tone detection. If a friend wants to try the app, create and calibrate a profile for them first.

  1. Find a quiet room.
  2. Click “Tap to speak” and say any single Thai word. There's no need to tap the button again—the recording will stop automatically when you finish speaking. See Useful words to practice below for suggestions.
  3. You’ll see your pitch shape, and the app will tell you which tone it heard.
  4. Optionally turn on a Guide Overlay for a visual hint of the tone you're trying to pronounce.
  5. Once you're comfortable with free practice, head back to the main menu and try the Tone Challenge game to test your skills.

⚠️ Detecting tones from pitch is not foolproof — the app can make mistakes. Don’t fully trust its result. Use it as guidance to point you in the right direction, but always double-check with a native speaker that your tones are understandable.

Tap any Thai word to hear it. Try saying it, and see if the app detects the right tone.

💡 The classic trio:
  • มา maa — to come (mid tone)
  • หมา măa — dog (rising tone)
  • ม้า máa — horse (high tone)
Mid เสียงสามัญ sĭang săa-man
  • ไป bpai — to go
  • นม nom — milk
  • กิน gin — to eat
Low เสียงเอก sĭang èk
  • ไก่ gài — chicken
  • ใหญ่ yài — big
Falling เสียงโท sĭang toh
  • ได้ dâai — can
  • ห้า hâa — five (5)
High เสียงตรี sĭang dtree
  • รัก rák — to love
  • น้ำ nám — water
Rising เสียงจัตวา sĭang jàt-dtà-waa
  • สวย sŭay — beautiful
  • ไหม măi — question particle

Tone Challenge

Pronunciation Practice

ฝึกวรรณยุกต์ fèuk wan-na-yúk

The Tone Challenge drills your Thai tones. The app shows a word, you say it into the microphone, and it scores how well your pitch matched the word’s tone — across a run of words for a final result.

You’ll use the same voice profile as the Tone Trainer. Pick one below (or add a new one) to begin.

During a run you can tap the Thai word to hear it spoken. This uses your device’s built-in text-to-speech, which often doesn’t reproduce Thai tones accurately — treat it as a rough aid, not a reliable pronunciation reference.
